Description
Variation: Collar or Bib
Handmade + hand-beaded in Kenya. Shipped to us through Ghana as cowrie shells are not allowed to be imported direct at this time.
There are pieces you wear because they’re beautiful.
And then there are pieces you wear because they say something.
This cowrie shell necklace falls into the second category.
In many African cultures, cowrie shells have long symbolized prosperity, femininity, and protection. They were adornment, currency, and spiritual marker—objects that carried meaning far beyond decoration. In the African diaspora, cowries have also come to represent remembrance and resistance, holding stories that were never meant to be forgotten.
This piece honors that lineage without trying to explain it away.
Each necklace is hand-beaded by our artisan partners in Kenya, using ethically sourced cowrie shells that respect both tradition and wildlife. The work is slow, intentional, and done entirely by hand—no two pieces are exactly alike.
Choose your statement:
Cowrie Shell Collar: Sits higher on the neckline. Sculptural, refined, and powerful in its restraint. This is the piece you reach for when you want presence without excess.
Cowrie Shell Bib: Dramatic, unapologetic, and commanding. Designed to draw the eye and hold it. This is not a background accessory—it’s for entrances, moments, and women who don’t shrink themselves to fit the room. As seen on Chloe Bailey and Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson.
Both variations are meant to be worn beyond special occasions. On vacation. At dinner. At events. Or on an ordinary day when you want to feel anchored in something older and bigger than trends.
Each order is made to order and ships in approximately 3 weeks.
This isn’t costume jewelry.
It’s adornment with memory.
Wear it how you want—but wear it like you mean it.
